The studio has some cracking history with RTS games - alongside the lastingly popular Company of Heroes ones, the first two Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War games and their expansions are glorious, bigger-than-cult hits - but Dawn of War 3's reception in 2017 was mixed. Much of this is likely down to the approach Relic has taken this time around. Take a decent look at the gameplay in this new trailer for Company of Heroes 3! It's early days - honestly, very early days, from what I played - but this, above all, seems to be the theme with CoH 3: it's all about recognising what was good about the last two games, and just doing more of it. And so, when Relic tells me that "humanising the battlefield" with more of these occasional barks is one of the "core pillars" of Company of Heroes 3, I'm delighted to hear it, probably even more than I am to hear about the fancy dynamic campaign or the wonderful southern-Med setting. I am not selling this! But still, the point is when the Americans parachute in all chipper like, or one of my little Russian comrades complains to another that "stealing my biscuits is not the Soviet way!", Company of Heroes is doing its job better than any RTS like it. It's about doing the voices, making the sounds of the guns, living out your twilight years with no-one but the model army in your basement. Like any good RTS, these are games about make-believe, about moving little men around a battlefield, role-playing as one of those retired, amateur history enthusiasts with too much spare time, who are themselves role-playing as a Second World War commander. If you’re looking for a next generation real-time strategy game, you can definitely find it in Company of Heroes 3, coming in February.Of all the things to like about Company of Heroes, I'm especially a fan of the conversations. The controls were complex for a real-time strategy game because the controls are designed to focus on individual units and specific areas of the map. The game is also capable of allowing you to place your troops into buildings so you can use every part of the landscape and for war, an addition to the game that I was thoroughly amazed by. This was developed to help ensure that you would not treat units as disposable, which is often the case for real-time strategy games. I was particularly impressed by how the developers spent a great deal of time providing voices for individual units for the game to ensure that you, the player, recognize the importance of your units. With each detail offering insight as to how to play the game, Company of Heroes 3 provides a unique experience like none other. It’s a well-thought out and crafted game concerned with even the slightest of details. I believe that Company of Heroes is truly a next-gen game. It demanded a special balancing act of paying attention to the fighting and producing troops to effectively counter your opponent.Īs someone who has not played the previous iterations of the game, I thought that I would be lost playing, but it is easy to pick up for a player with real-time strategy experience. It requires spawning specialized units by building unique structures to produce these units, while taking on the responsibility of a full-blown battle. While the objective of the multiplayer sounds simple, it’s a complex operation. To win, you have to conquer certain spaces and hold on to them for certain portion of time. Each faction has its own unique capabilities making the first foundational step into multiplayer extremely consequential. You have the choice of playing as Americans, British or the Nazis. The campaign also succeeds in getting you familiar with the game so that you can play the game competitively with other players, which is the game’s endgame portion. I valued that each step of the campaign compounded the experience from the previous level to help secure the skill set required to play the game. The units that are gained can then be used in real-time battles to defeat Nazis. The recommendations that the generals provide for the campaign are historically inspired. Conquering Italy requires thoughtful consultation with and appeasement of British and American generals under your command to gain access to specialized units.
